Charities: Mercy Corp

The main emphasis behind our trip apart from the delivery of the wonderful goddess is the money being raised for charity.
Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.
“Thanks to the Mongol Rally, Mercy Corp is able to help struggling communities live a sustainable and independent life. Funds raised by the rally have helped over 49,000 families over the past three years“—Dominic, Mercy Corp Director
Their Country Goal is to support rural communities to mobilize resources to meet their economic and social needs. Mercy Corps Mongolia intends to achieve sustainable change in three key areas that contribute to the above goal:
Economic Development » Mercy Corps takes a community-led and market-driven approach to facilitate lasting systemic change, supporting the establishment and growth of sustainable mechanisms for improving access to information, training, financial services, business services and markets.
Civil Society » Mercy Corps works with local Civil Society Organisations to foster social innovations that: a) establish and/or energize local civil society, b) assist Civil Society Organisations to build their capacity for delivering relevant, accountable services that strengthen their reputation and relevance to the communities in which they operate, and c) strengthen productive relationships between government, civil society and businesses through information exchange, public discussion and competitive outsourcing of government contracts to promote local economic growth underpinned by greater transparency, accountability and understanding between stakeholders.
Natural Resource Management » By improving access to, and use of, information and new technologies Mercy Corps works to reverse the effects of pastureland degradation and desertification that have intensified in recent years; increasing incentives for adopting environmentally responsible practices and improving systems for managing shared resources.

The majority of activities implemented by Mercy Corps Mongolia target rural areas. Some Mercy Corps activities have national scope, but the focus of operations is in the twelve Aimags where Mercy Corps has permanent field offices (Arkhangai, Bayankhongor, Dundgovi, Dornogovi, Govi-Altai, Govi-Sumber, Khovd, Sukhbaatar, Umnugovi, Uvs, Uvurkhangai, Zavkhan).
